MATAMOROS

Violence in Matamoros is a daily soap opera. A few weeks ago organized crime swept into the city, kidnapped a couple and filled a federal facility with bullet holes rescuing a comrade.

Several days later the fed's top man and his assistant were shot dead in broad daylight. They were found slumped over in their car with a briefcase filled with $20,000 at their feet.

The following weekend carnage covered the busy streets. Nine persons met their deaths in automobile accidents during a 48-hour period. El Bravo blamed drunk drivers and inefficient law enforcement.

Yesterday a women and a young girl died when the compact they were driving to Bagdad Beach met a truck head-on. Their vehicle resembled a crushed soda can.

Surprisingly, the story played second fiddle to the 66-year-old man who beat his 42-year-old wife mercilessly. After kicking and punching the woman in front of their son, the enraged husband grabbed a hammer and yanked out her teeth as if they were nails.

Jealous because he imagined her with other lovers after his death, he took a knife and buried it in her head. The police arrived to find the bloodied woman breathing. The perpetrator had fled the scene. Authorities suspect he is hiding in Brownsville.
