MAGAZINE DENOUNCES BROWNSVILLE
International Adventure, one of the most prestigious magazines in the United States, has named Brownsville the most unattractive city in this crumbling nation of polarized wealth.
Sam Jenkins, the publication's editor, writes: "I have never seen a city decay so dramatically in a decade. The city's fathers have chosen to industrialize this community of palm trees and resacas. In the process, they have destroyed a tropical paradise's natural beauty.
"A dust hangs in the air that only adds to the drab brown that characterizes the scenery. Traffic is terrible in this town of convenience stores and fastfood restaurants.
"I walk through the historical downtown, which will soon be history at the rate it's deteriorating. I stopped and talked with the prostitutes and transvestites working the flophouses and I couldn't help but think that they were as ugly as the city itself.
"I ventured halfway across Gateway Bridge and peered into the river. I had this nightmarish vision of raw sewage and decomposing bodies. I couldn't believe my eyes the next morning when I read the paper and discovered the utility company intended to build a dam to collect this poison. Damn!
"I knew I had tasted the dregs. I have been to the ends of the earth, but I had never actually fallen off the edge until I found myself at the bottom of the abyss called Brownsville."
